Disturbance in East Market

Account of a Foreign Trader, taken by Chang’an County Magistrate, East Marketplace, 696 A.D. --

“It was noon, the hour of the horse. Furs, spices, strange birds -- this is all I sell. My kiosk is small. This is all I was doing. Then I see GHOSTS in the crowd. My God. I think I am imagining. I keep working. Then MORE! Spirits, phantoms with white faces! I don’t know what to do! Can they be real? Suddenly, one is there, RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! I freeze. I look at it close… Can it be a woman?

“I shake my head. She slams her fists on my stand. I want to run, but she grabs me! People everywhere scream. From the corner of my eye, I see others. People falling! I feel myself being pulled. My feet leave the ground…

“I do not remember anything after that.”
