Statement from the Li Aristocracy of Chang’an, recorded by an official of the Imperial Secretariat, 697 A.D. --
It is with profound regret that we speak today on behalf of all the shih families of this fair city and the great empire which is the State of Chou. Your Majesty, you who have brought so much richness to our lives, and rewarded us much with your wise and powerful rule, we implore you to view the recent terror and misgivings which have plagued our metropolis as a threat to your ascension. We implore Your Majesty to not look lightly upon such an ominous and organized threat to the Legalist principles to which you yourself pay high esteem. We implore Your Majesty to not look lightly upon activity so commercial and marked by non-traditional thought. To do so would be to act in defiance of the strong central government Your Majesty has worked hard to perpetuate. To do so would be to act in disrespect of the battles fought, blood spilled and wisdom ordained from the T’ang Kings whom have come before Your Majesty. Do not betray the memory of the great General Li Kuang-li and Emperor Li Shih-min. Do not betray the Li Family of T’ang emperors. They have made way for Your Majesty’s divine ascension. Do not betray their elite families, the very hundred-names who petitioned for Your Majesty’s rule and placed the crown in the keeping of Your Majesty’s venerable dynasty.
